There's a new spot celebrating its Soft Opening this Sunday in Jersey City, and residents of The Heights should be very excited! The Hutton will open in the same space previously occupied by Monaghan's Bar at 225 Hutton Street (on the corner of Hutton Street & Sanford Place). Monaghan's closed on New Year's Eve in 2013 after 40 years of serving The Heights community, so this new spot should be welcomed into the community with open arms!

We had the opportunity to speak with Owner Ian Woodcock (who bought the space about a year ago) and Executive Chef Deuhana Vargas, and their excitement about opening their doors on Sunday is very clear. The Hutton will open at 11am this Sunday, October 9th, with food service beginning at 4pm. It will be open for dinner service daily from 4pm until late (tentatively 11:30pm Mon-Wed & midnight Thurs-Sun). Doors will open at 3pm when drinks and snacks will be available. Brunch service is in the works, and will most likely begin in 2-3 weeks. At this time, The Hutton will not be offering Happy Hour specials.

The Space

The Hutton features both an indoor and outdoor space. The inside seats 65 (including bar stools), and Ian thought it was important to keep many of the raw elements from the old space including the exposed brick, tin roof, and elements of the original bar. Before it was Monaghan's, this space was a speakeasy during Prohibition. Ian recounted a story from a member of the community he recently spoke with whose 92 year old mother remembers playing in the street and peeking into the building to see a bunch of men drinking when alcohol was illegal.

The backyard features a ton of space, and a huge Oak tree provides ample shade which will be awesome for the summer months. The old wine barrels with table tops are a great touch, as is the backdrop of the old bar which has been moved to the backyard.

The Menu

Ian moved to the U.S. from Ireland when he was 19 years old, so there are definitely some pub classics on the menu, though he describes it as New-American gastropub fare. He also aims to have The Hutton pour "the best pint of Guinness in Jersey City." Chef Deuhana describes the menu: "Some items contain an Irish flavor, but it is not an Irish pub." The Hutton features a full bar with 12 beers on tap (6 craft) as well as an extensive wine list divided into "Old World" and "New World" options. They do plan to host food and wine pairings in the future. Chef Deuhana's favorite wine on the menu is the Vietti Moscato d'Asti (also featured on the dessert menu).

There is definitely something for everyone at The Hutton. The menu features 4 items deemed "The Hutton Classics": the Jersey Irish Grilled Cheese (pictured above), The Hutton Burger, Flat Bread, and Fish and Chips. Chef Duehana is also offering serving up everything from steak to oysters on the half shell, and there are multiple vegan plates as well.

The Hutton's signature cocktail is The Martinez (pictured above), and it sure does look tasty!
