What happens when National Rosé Day and the Riverview Jazz Festival are on a gorgeous sunny Saturday?

Free Jazz! Riverview Fisk Park Overlooking The Hudson & Manhattan

Never heard of Riverview Jazz? No worries, it is a non-profit organization founded in Jersey City. The goal is to "bring music to the people" and showcase "Jazz - America's greatest musical art form." An annual, week-long festival took place this past week, with the kick off downtown at the new Urby building, and concluding with an all-day festival at the Riverview Fisk Park. Events were held throughout the week around town, to boot.

After this event I am converted and am impatiently awaiting the next one! Already making my check list for next year - it will include a blanket, cooler for water and chairs to sit and chill. Families are welcome, and in fact, I immediately felt like part of the JC Heights family. JC Heights is a community of creatives and all around awesome, friendly neighbors. This festival is a celebration of jazz, that is energized by the culture of the neighborhood. The weather was gorgeous, and the Summer vibes were felt. Read below for some more details about jazz, bites, and the culture.

Food trucks were set up along the riverfront, ensuring access to food pics with the skyline in the backdrop. I did a food truck crawl and happily report every single vendor was delish! Big Mozz was out with oozey, gooey melty cheese sticks. Each order is a whopping half pound of Mozzarella cheese and is fried to order encased in a breading that is made with fresh garlic, parsley and hand broken French baguettes. It's then garnished generously with pecorino romano, and served with tangy marinara sauce - def check them out if you get the chance! Local favorite El Chilango was serving up the authentic Mexican tacos, while Milk Sugar Love brought the ice cream sandwiches!

The Most Instagram-able Award of the Day Goes to…

Gypsy Pop's watermelon bowl. Freshly scooped mini watermelon , loaded up with a signature fruit pop plus coconut flakes and spices. Healthy and tasty is win-win in my book. Find them around Jersey City and beat the heat with a tasty, cool treat in hand!

Saturday's all-day festival is one for the books. Riverview Fisk Park is perched atop cliffs in the Heights. Views of Manhattan act as the back drop to the stage. Acts ranged from hyper local, to famous. Music began around noon and lasted till sunset. Each act brought a uniquely different sound and vibe to the stage. Highlights include the salsa infused Fania Project, old school OG drummer Jimmy Cobb and new age jazz icon Camille Thurman. This is a soulful event best experienced in person!

Snarky Horns

Ever heard of Snarky Puppy? Fresh off a 10 week international tour, the Snarky Horns subgroup of the aforementioned put on a show for the ages. Everyone, I mean everyone, was moving and grooving to the drums, bass and horns. The sounds were top notch; the audience was be-bopping along to the tunes. I wonder who will be playing next year?

If you love good music, amazing food, and a warm environment, the Riverview Jazz Festival is a must! More info + events can be found at riverviewjazz.org. Events are held through out the year all over Jersey City. See you there!
