Nearly 2 years after the walking path of the Manayunk Bridge opened to the public in October of 2015, funding has been secured to light the bridge! According to The Review, construction is set to begin in the Fall of 2018, with expected completion by the Spring of 2019. The various organizations involved-which include the Philadelphia and Lower Merion Parks and Recreation departments, SEPTA, PECO, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, the Manayunk Development Corp., and various state departments-are currently in the planning phase. Being evaluated right now are 4 different types of lighting, as well as the potential installation of benches and tables to allow for people to spend more time on the bridge.
The lighting would allow for the bridge to remain open later (gates currently close at 9pm from April-October, and 6pm November-March), and even potentially remain open 24/7. Security cameras, as well as signage and planters are also currently being considered in the plan. We're so excited to see the plan completed, and can't wait to spend more time on the bridge at night to take in the awesome views!
