There's nothing better than enjoying a handcrafted cocktail or an ice-cold beer outside at one of the neighborhood's local bars on a sunny Summer day. One of our favorite – and most popular – areas to do so is the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, which is sprinkled with picnic tables and restaurants with sidewalk seating. However, some of our other favorite outdoor drinking spots are a little off the beaten path. So with just under 2 months of summer left, we highly recommend you go enjoy yourself with a refreshing libation!
The Lutze Biergarten
The Harborside community has welcomed this sprawling biergarten to the neighborhood with open arms. The dog-friendly, outdoor-only space has a great selection of beer, wine, and cocktails, many of which support local breweries and distilleries. Accessible via the PATH, Light ail, ferry, by car, or by foot, The Lutze is a prime location to grab a drink with friends and family, and watch the sunset over lower Manhattan.
Opened in 2009, this biergarten has always been a downtown favorite for it's classic German dishes and rotating selection of over 100 European and U.S. craft beers. The expansive restaurant and bar is nestled away at the end of Liberty View Drive and features a large outdoor area with community tables. On Friday and Saturday nights, come for the beer, wurst, and pretzels, and stay for the live entertainment.
This beloved pizzeria is the most centrally located of our favorite outdoor drinking spots. Complete with pizza ovens and multiple bars, the rooftop at Porta is the perfect place to come with a group to celebrate the weekend, or solo for mid-week happy hour. There's nothing better than enjoying the superior views of downtown to the live music of local bands while sipping on one of their signature cocktails.
One of the best things about summer is drinking at the beach with your friends, and Surf City has made that possible in this beach-less urban jungle. Right on the canal with views of the Hudson, this "beach" bar boasts a sand-filled seating area with fire pits, picnic tables, and barstools, all of which you can relish your frozen margarita while relaxin.
If breath-taking views are your thing, then Taphaus is the place for you. The waterfront restaurant just recently opened a new outdoor patio. If the views aren't enticing enough, they have an incredible selection of beers, wines, and reasonably-priced drinks that will keep you coming back for happy hour, dinner, and even a nightcap.
