It's here, it's weird, it's awesome. September in the Triangle is known for its festivals, and SPARKcon is no exception when it comes to being an ever-growing staple of downtown Raleigh. SPARKcon is the Triangle's creativity festival brought forth "for the people, by the people" featuring more than 2,000 artists in 2000 events. Each "spark" showcases a talented different medium of expression from the commonly known art, music, and film to the "weirder" shades of creativity including circus, geekery, and sharing ideas. The best part is that it's all local and free. The creative flames burn (literally and figuratively) throughout the entire weekend, but the brightest SPARKs glow at night! Check out a few of our picks to ignite your spark after dark!
fashionSPARK Wear What You Are Fashion Show
Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Friday 8:30-10pm
fashionSPARK features local designers as the largest fashion show in Raleigh for the past decade! This year is no different in scale, except now the runway will be in the fountain of Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. Among new up and coming local designers, expect to see returning treats from custom Indian wear designer, Julkee Fashion, to state-inspired streetwear from Runaway Clothing. As always fashionSPARK is free and open to the public with an afterparty at Trophy Tap and Table following immediately after.
danceSPARK GLOW Zumba Party
Capitol Building Main Stage (Fayetteville and Morgan Street Intersection), Friday 8pm
Put on your neon tights and headbands to join the best Zumba instructors in the Triangle where fun meets fitness. Feel the burn as you twist and turn in a mix of high and low intensity moves to Latin and world music. Bring sneakers, water, and tons of energy! All ages and fitness levels welcome.
circusSPARK Fire Conclave and Drumming
City Plaza, Friday 10pm
When there's smoke, there's fire. Don't be alarmed by the beat of drums and gathering crowds, it's probably
circusSPARK's Fire Conclave. Featuring literal flaming hoops, firebreathers, and flame throwers, these daredevils dance to the rhythm of live drumming by One Tribe and Raleigh Drum Circle. Like moths to a flame, the Fire Conclave is a beloved firestarter that beckons crowds from under the neon glow of the bars and clubs nearby to the hearth of Raleigh's streets.
Glam Rock Dance Party
Saturday, City Plaza 10 PM
Bust out the moves you learned in
danceSPARK's many workshops under the light of the flamethrowing bus. That's right - look for the repurposed school bus tricked out with flame throwers and listen for the speakers blasting glam rock hits. Just like the rest of SPARKcon, this dance party expects audience participation. Truthfully, no one can pass up the opportunity to dance in the middle of the street among glittery circus performers and onlookers alike, so don't be shy and dance like no one is watching.
Renee is sit-down comedienne and event photographer when she's not at her day job. While it doesn't pay the bills, her talents are an excuse to day drink craft brews on rooftops, get into festivals on Fayetteville Street, and general gallivanting. Outdoors she's usually seen with her default date: her dog Max, scoping out a spot to people watch and heckle passersby. Her mother says the two worst things you can give her indoors are a drink and a mic.
