It's not too late to get yourself onto the Nice List this year, and there are lots of ways to give back to the community and volunteer this holiday season to help you do just that! Check out our list of volunteering opportunities in Jersey City to find something that fits your interests and to help you get into the spirit of giving back.

Hunger Helpers

This program is run by the St. Lucy's Shelter, which provides emergency shelter and food for those in need. Volunteers are required for assistance with meal preparation, sorting, and distributing food. This program runs every Wednesday, food preparation and sorting begins at 4pm, food distribution runs from 5pm-6:30pm. 619 Grove St.

Garden State Episcopal CDC

There are many ways to volunteer with GSECDC: assisting with their homeless drop-in center, organizing and staffing the on-site Clothes Closet, providing assistance with food preparation and service, assisting program participants with using the computers for employment and apartment applications, and assisting with collecting supplies for Drives. 514 Newark Ave.

Feed the Needy

Run by St. Joseph Church, this program distributes lunch to people who are less fortunate in the Jersey City area Monday - Friday (12pm - 2pm). Volunteers are needed to prepare sandwiches and package food into containers. Food left over from parties or cash donations are welcome, as well. 511 Pavonia Ave.

Jersey City Soup Kitchen

Associated with the St. Mary's Jersey City Catholic Church, the Soup Kitchen Ministry volunteers serve precooked meals to our guests at a Jersey City soup kitchen the third Saturday of every month. Volunteers leave the church at 9:00 AM and return by 2:30 PM, with carpooling available. Volunteers are also needed to cook the food that will be served, and to receive precooked meals one Wednesday evening per month. Liberty Humane Society

If you are interested in using your love of animals for good, this is the perfect opportunity for you! There are a wide range of responsibilities that require volunteers. Commitment can rang from fostering an animal at your home, maintaining a clean environment at the shelter, assisting with feeding, walking and bathing dogs, advertising the animals through photos and videos, and assisting with the animal education programs or special events. Volunteer hours are Tuesday through Friday - 8:30am to 7pm, and Saturday, Sunday & Monday - 8:30am to 4pm. 235 Jersey City Blvd.

JC Shovels

With winter in full-swing, we are drawing closer to the time of year where the desire for a White Christmas is somewhat dampened by the need for snow removal. This program pairs volunteers with seniors in their area who will be volunteering their time to shovel the seniors' homes within 10 hours after the snow stops falling. Shovels and salt are provided by the Department of Public Works (DPW). If you require a shovel, please email jcshovels@jcnj.org. Shovels can be picked up at the DPW or can be scheduled to be delivered to your house (Mondays-Fridays from 10am-3pm), and the salt will be delivered to the senior's home.

Blood Drive Assistance

Blood services volunteers are required to welcome donors at the blood drives, assist with the registration process, provide refreshments, and ensure that donors feel healthy before they leave. The times are variable, with each drive lasting 5 hours. 257 Cornelison Ave.

Earth Keepers in Jersey City (Veteran's Cemetery)

Run by the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Veterans Cemetery, the team of Earth Keepers volunteer to maintain parks, gardens and green spaces throughout New Jersey. Volunteers help maintain and improve such areas through a variety of gardening projects. No experience is necessary. This program runs on Saturdays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9am-12pm. 435 Newark Ave.

Color a Smile

You are never to old to enjoy a little bit of coloring, especially if it can be used to brighten someone's holiday season! Color a smile is an organization that distributes drawings to senior citizens, troops overseas, and anyone else who might need some cheering up. Volunteers are required to simply color a holiday card and mail it to the organization, this is a very easy low-commitment opportunity that can go a long way!
