As reported by
The News & Observer, Calavera Empanadas & Tequila will be closing for good on Saturday, February 24th. Although we are saddened by the closing, we're happy that everyone will have the chance to enjoy a final National Margarita Day on Thursday! Owner Ken Yowell opened Calavera in 2011, Oak City Meatball Shoppe next door in 2014, and he also plans to open Kaiju Bowl and Bao in April of this year.
A note posted Sunday on the Calavera Empanadas and Tequila Facebook Page states:
Hey everyone, our hope was that we would have the staff and the ability to continue operating until Saturday the 24th but unfortunately we are too short handed to be able to do that. We've made the decision to close the first part of the week, regroup, and are pulling in some favors from friends to get us open Thursday, Friday and Saturday instead. We are very sorry to the folks that made reservations for the days we are having to close but we just don't have the staff to be able to operate at a level that would leave you or us happy. We hope you'll come out and see us Thursday for National Margarita Day and this weekend. We appreciate everyone's understanding.
The original note announcing the closing explained:
Friends and family,
After an amazing ride we have come to the decision to close Calavera Empanadas and Tequila in downtown Raleigh. Our last day of operation will be Saturday February 24th and we hope you'll come out to celebrate our final 2 weeks and our last National Margarita Day. Our remaining 2 weeks will be dinner service only Tuesday through Sunday.
Our kitchen and it's small size has kept us from really growing the menu and allowing us to change and add where we would like. We've entertained the idea of looking for a location more suited to what we want to do for awhile but have never found anything that matched our needs and wants. We were out of the blue approached with an offer to sell, and while we weren't actively exploring that, with our new restaurants on the horizon we felt this was the best time to step away.
We have met with our staff today and let them know of our intention so as to give them 2 weeks notice. We will be helping to place folks at our other restaurant Oak City Meatball Shoppe, and Kaiju when we open, as well as give letters of recommendation where needed.
We appreciate everyone's support over the last 6 years and we hope to see you all in the future.
We will continue to update the situation as details on the new spot are released!
